(capsule) NYC - Womenswear

The womenswear show was a lot less crowded than the menswear, and it's likely because I was there for the early portion of Saturday (the first day of its three-day run.) I saw a lot of what we're looking forward to in terms of clothing for Fall, so I really focused on accessories for this one, here's the favorites from the fourth floor, where I spent most of my time:

First (5) photos, all handmade by the spectacular Judith Haas (someone say awesome?), next (3) photos Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer (can you handle the intricacy of that second piece? It's pretty amazing on so many levels...), and that last shot of a cropped vest(?) comes from none other than one of my favorite sites to stalk, Wool & the Gang! It falls so awesomely on the body, you have to see how adorably it falls off the shoulder, I cannot wait until it's up for sale (or the kit is out!).

A Brief Reflection

I haven't been as active as I should or want to be here, there's a lot of things going on that I need to attend to, but I needed to pause and seriously thank my readers; I recently checked out my stats and I was completely shocked and grateful to find that my direct traffic has increased to almost 20% !

You are all fantastic, I couldn't ask for a better set of readers, thanks for your ongoing support, comments, and awesome posts to my fellow bloggers! Just because I'm silent here, doesn't mean I'm not still reading ;) I also wanted to announce that if you visit Ripped Nylon and can't find it or find that things look strange, please forgive the mess as I'm going about the migration to WP, wish me luck! I'm ready for some changes around here!

p.s. I tried to find a thank you graphic, but everything was too awful to post here, the era of myspace really wrecked the graphic language, lol. Instead, here's a sweet reminder that Spring is coming, who doesn't love this pattern from L.A.M.B. S11 :D

Weekends at Fischer

In a recent post (recent being one month old, but who's counting!), I alluded to some excitement in my life, and it's high time my lazy butt sat down to share! After an interview I conducted, I kept in touch with Ms. Kristina Angelozzi of Fischer clothing, and have met with her on several weekends to lend a hand wherever it's needed! It's been really cool just learning the basics of running a brand and picking up tidbits of the production process. I even got to attend the (capsule) Menswear Trade Show, and am SO excited to attend the womenswear show this coming weekend! The menswear show began on a Monday, so I missed the day at the height of its energy when buyers were present, but this time the first day is a Saturday, and I won't be missing a moment of it!

The Aletta is my favorite for sure, the print and shape are just about all I would want to add to a great dress, and I wouldn't be stepping out of my dark-colored cocoon with it as I would with the Monica, which is as delicious as a slice of the promise of spring warmth to come. Do not even talk to me about the texture on the Mother-of-Pearl flip top because I'll likely lack the eloquence necessary to discuss it. Just being honest.

To be perfectly honest, I'm at a slight loss for words, since I'm still excited about what's going on in my life. I will write a more complete post when things are solid, but I can say that this past Monday I had the pleasure of attending (read: walking around and drooling at) the (capsule) Menswear trade show in Chelsea. There were only about half a billion brands represented, so while I tried to take pictures of my favorites, this doesn't even begin to cover the amount of people and the sheer energy coursing through the place. Though I have a day job and couldn't be there at the height of buyer presence, I still did get to catch the last few hours of the show, and there are a lot of great things to look forward to this fall:

I'm excited that lot of the designers present did a fantastic job of incorporating more vivid colors into their lines, it's going to be a delicious fall! As you can see, Bass had their women's shoes out, too! I am an oxford lover, and those perforated ones are a well-executed derivative (read: I WANT). Overall, an exhausting and fascinating day, I can't wait until the next one!

FBFF: Morning Routine

1. How do you determine what you will wear that day?
It depends on what I'm doing, during the week, I care very little about what I wear, because my office's dress code is very casual... JEANS. Every day. I love and hate it because it's easy, but sometimes I wish I did have more reason to dress up. (I know, no reasons are needed, and I would dress up more, but my reasons for not doing so relate largely to the... tense environment I work in.)

2. Do you plan outfits out in advance for a whole week, month, weekend?
I almost never plan outfits ahead, unless it's a special occasion, like a concert!

3. Do you have any specific way of tracking outfits and items already worn so you don't repeat?
Yes, it's called a hamper...er, laziness. I do laundry very sparingly, so my method of avoiding repetition is to hold out as long as possible until there's nothing left to wear ;)

4. How do you discover new combinations of items in your closet? (Trial try-ons? Hanging items together?)
See answer to no. 3! We'll say process of elimination, because I don't always wear the same things together, so items are slowly removed from the selection, which forces me to wear different combinations.

5. To streamline the process for 2011 what is one new thing you can do to cut down your dressing time?
I suppose I don't need to streamline my daily process, but I could stand to give more thought to my daily outfits to pep up the days.... Maybe if I had a closet like the one in the picture, I would spend more time on it ;)

Color Block Booties.

I've been messing with the camera a lot, since I may be introducing outfit posts soon... If these booties don't motivate me, I'm not sure what will. :D

FBFF: The Popularity Contest

1. Have you ever looked at someone's blog and thought yours will never measure up?
Honestly, I don't think I've ever had the thought that I won't "measure up" to someone else's blog. The term "measure up" seems incorrect, because it can't be assumed that any one blogger is seeking to attract the same reader base as another, focus on the same topics, or use the same writing methods. I prefer to provide my readers with a commentary, and open the forum for their opinions on the topic, while some blogs are satisfied to post an image a day with perhaps a sentence or two, which is fine because that's what they set out to do.

2. Do you (did you) feel pressure to meet some kind of undefined standard for fashion bloggers?
When I began blogging, I did feel that there was something I was missing out on, but I realized that there are so many blogs out there that it's impossible to adhere to any set of rules! I think the one thing that is standard in this whole fashion blogosphere is that everyone has to go through the journey to find their voice and place, which gives these things their beauty. I love reading/interacting with new bloggers and watching their corner of the internet grow and change, and trying to cultivate my own growth and change.

3. Many established fashion bloggers are also extraordinary DIYers, bakers, and crafty people. Do you think you need to combine all of these things to be successful at blogging?
While it's always awesome to find out more about a blogger's life and talents, I don't think it's a necessary part of successful blogging. Dedication and focus are definitely key in becoming successful, at least by my definition. I think that anyone who is happy with what they post and feels pride in their work can count themselves a successful blogger.

4. The most successful blogs are the ones that have their own personal voice - how are you developing your voice or how did you find yours?
I can honestly say that I'm still trying to find my voice. At the beginning of my blog, I was wading in the unclear connection between architecture (which I studied) and fashion. Over time, that's changed with the deeper I get into fashion, but I've resolved to focus in and really establish a niche for myself.

5. Toot your own horn... what's one thing you do that is unique to you and your blog? What gives your blog an edge?
See answer to #4! This question is hard because I don't quite think my blog has "an edge." I do take pride in my interviews, though, I've enjoyed each of them so much, and I love interacting with other bloggers and feel that I write in a way that makes my readers feel welcome, so maybe that's part of what makes Ripped Nylon unique.

FBFF: 2011!

1. What's the one thing you vow to learn or do in 2011 to improve your blog?
I plan to take the plunge and get myself a domain name! I am also excited to say that I've found some direction, and that blog posts will be scheduled appropriately and with more frequency. My difficulty comes with remaining consistent, my life has a tendency to be very busy on/off, so blogging is neglected more than I would like. I'm choosing a day and time just for writing out my posts and setting up a regulated schedule! Look forward to some graphic and content changes on Ripped Nylon!

2. What did you learn about blogging in 2010 that you plan to put into practice next year?
I learned that it is not at all as easy at it may seem! The commitment involved is amazing, and I plan to have more fun with it, immerse myself more, so that the dialog created is continuous and relevant.

3. Do you have any high-level goals for your blog in the coming year? Monetization? More comments? More connections with other bloggers? A new template?
As in my answer for number one, YES! I plan on re-designing the interface for Ripped Nylon, and though I will keep the clean look, I do anticipate a little more graphic activity. I also plan to make the move from Blogger to Wordpress!

4. If you could collaborate with one other blogger within your sphere of influence in 2011, who would you like to collaborate with, and what would you like to collaborate on?
I would love to collaborate with Grit & Glamour author, Vahni, on a Color Challenge I've been cooking in the back of my head for quite some time! More details on that soon, I think it would be a lot of fun to share with the whole FBFF group!!

5. What do you plan to do to support other bloggers next year?
I love reading and commenting, so I plan on keeping to my style of continuous presence on several blogs, and building up on others. I find that the best encouragement for me is consistent readers, so I like to give the same to the blogs that I read :). I also would like to incorporate a featured blogger or guest blogger of the month, to help promote those around me who may be starting up.

What are your resolutions?

Introducing: The Soft Side of Ripped Nylon

With holiday-induced stress levels rising, I'm always looking for yet another creative outlet, and my latest obsession is knitting! A year ago, I decided to learn how to knit and I have not once been bored or tired of it! I love the reward of creating pieces from something as simple as yarn and two needles and I decided that it would be awesome to share my work with my readers, so over the near future, I'll be featuring my projects, and accepting requests through my knitting blog, The Knitting Co.. Yesterday was pretty special because for the first time in a long time, I woke up early! I was so happy that I dressed up for work, which naturally turns into asking my coworker if he could pretend that we weren't taking pictures in the middle of the street. Of about ten shots, I pulled these:

NYE 2010

With NYE fast approaching, a girl has to know what to wear to ring in the New Year. Every year I've spent it at home or with family, and though I do love that and my family, I want to have myself a big girl's NYE this year and take myself and the bf (along with a few fabulous friends) for a night out!! The day is drawing near and I am certain that it's ridiculously late to choose a location since prices are probably sky high but who's concerned with that when there are dresses and accessories to be chosen? So far, I'm deciding between the following few:

Interview: Fischer Clothing

A few months ago, I learned about Fischer Clothing, and have since kept tabs on this lovingly created brand. I would say more, but I'd rather you read it straight from the designer herself!

What inspired you to develop your own line?
My idea is to create a collection of Mens and Womens American sportswear, sustainably manufactured here in the US. The pieces are higher quality in fabric and construction, and intended to stay in style and to have a long life. It's really a slow-fashion model, you're investing in quality. As for the aesthetic- it's very classic, but with vintage inspiration and inventive details to keep it interesting and fresh.

Where is the name “Fischer” from?
I wanted the line to have its own personality. So I decided to give it a name a little removed from my own- Fischer’s a Scottish name I found digging through some family ancestry. I liked the sound and feel of it and thought it suited the concept perfectly.

How many people do you work with?
Not too many- I really only hire people on for photo shoots and of course work with a local factory for production. I'd love to have a few extra hands, so hopefully next year!

Though your aesthetic is clear, each collection has a distinct theme, what influenced the design of the Fall 2010 vs the Spring 2011 collections?
For Fall 10, I drew a lot of inspiration from artist Jules Pascin. His work is pretty somber and minimal, and he makes beautiful use of line, mood and contrast. He was known for mixing materials and testing different methods of painting and drawing. I incorporated this into my work by pairing off combos like shell and corduroy on one of the dresses. A men’s vest I did a wool front with chambray back and lining; trying to make subtle, but interesting juxtapositions.

For Spring, I spent a lot of time designing under the influence of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. I love the laid-back, dreamy vibe- with a tinge of 70's nostalgia. There's like 20 people in the band playing all sorts of instruments, which creates a really interesting sound. This translated into a collection of casual styles cut from higher-end fabrics- I used a lot of different shades and weights of denim, linens, silks, flowery prints and casual plaids in a range of mostly natural colors and all natural fibers.

Can you describe the design process from start to finish of your favorite piece in your latest collection?
It always starts with the general concept; I pull together a mood board of inspiring imagery. Next I choose the fabrics and trims. I like to let the fabric direct the shape of the garment, the way it hangs, move, the weight of it, etc. Then I'll do a few rough sketches and see how everything looks together as a line. I try to pre-edit as much as possible so there's a lot less waste.
From Spring 11, one of my favorite pieces was a women’s dress with a water color-y circle print. It's a lightweight linen and drapes beautifully. And it’s a little transparent, which is cool. It’s a more expensive fabric, but I kept it in a looser casual style- like a perfect beach daydress.

The photos on your site are presented in a similarly antique/dream-like atmosphere, how do you decide the appropriate environment for your photos?
The shoot is one of my favorite parts of the process. I worked in theater for a while and the biggest thrill is putting all the costumes on the actors, in makeup, on stage with the scenery and music and all that. Which is why I prefer to shoot the lookbooks in a creative and inspiring environment, I still get that feeling of completion. When researching a location I keep the theme of that season in mind try to find something that will compliment the collection. Most of the homes are interior designers... I'm thinking of changing it up for Spring 12, though...

Where can Fischer be purchased and do you have plans to open up a store of your own?
Currently the line is carried at Thistle and Clover (Brooklyn, NY), Deen (Jersey City, NJ) and online at TheClothingMenu.com. I'm very excited to share the news that an online shop is going to be added to the site in February! I'll keep you posted.

What's in store for the next collection?

For the Fall 11, I've been playing with a lot of pattern-mixing, plaids and prints alongside fabrics with a lot of interesting textures. I've also been focusing on growing the line, adding to the number of styles and putting out some accessories, which is exciting.

What do you do in your spare time?

I'm a total hobbyist- I love cooking, craft-making, sewing, etc. Also I like to get out to see music, museums, traveling.... It's really inspiring living in Brooklyn right now. There's this total resurgance of craft-culture.

What advice could you give to an aspiring young designer?
Do some good internships and learn as much as you can working for someone else and or at school..... when you're ready to go out on your own, be prepared for a ton of work that you absolutely love to do.

When I want make a purchase, I have a tendency to be lazy, by which I mean I wait out my urges for up to a few months, just to test how much I want something. The method works out sometimes, because I save money in the good way (not buying something I don't need), and sometimes I save money in the bad way, when the item I've been stalking is sold out (-_-). Well, I still want an envelope clutch (as mentioned in this post) and thanks to ShopStyle, a sweet alternative has been brought to my attention:

Interview: Ghubar Magazine

A while ago, I wrote about an absolutely lovely e-magazine I stumbled across, and I have since fallen in love with the diverse and interesting content, to the point where I wanted to know more about the people behind it! I sent a request to the editor, Ms. Sarah Diouf, and received an immediate and enthusiastic response, so without further ado, here it is!

What inspired you to create Ghubar?
Well, I just realized there was no fashion (and arts) magazine showing real diversity in terms of models choices and subjects. It was - and still is - all about the it trend, the it-girl and not about the real upcoming talents... while there are a lot of amazing people out there willing to be discovered and show their work. The message I wanted to deliver through Ghubar was "come as you are, there is a place for you".

How many people are currently involved in the production of the magazine?
Well, I have a team of 10 people who are respectively helping with the editing, styling, production, and development of the magazine. They are all amazing and I am so proud and happy to work with them.

Can you describe your process from start to finish of an issue?
Once the main editorial line is decided, fashion and beauty editor submit their editorials and content directions. Then the styling work is on. We start pulling from showrooms and setting everything up to shoot, working regarding the deadlines. All the content is sent to me and I start working on it with our graphic designer. Once the issue is wrapped, the whole content is sent to the webmaster who puts it online. And it starts again.

How do you decide what to feature each month, and do you accept reader submissions?
Even if I take the decision for the main editorial line, we all talk together about what we can feature in the magazine. I think it's important for everybody to contribute with content submissions and make it a real team effort. Also, we are pretty open and always pay attention to what our reader like and suggest.

As a stylist and photographer, how do you decide the appropriate environments for your shoots, and which has been your favorite?
(laughs) I will never have the pretention to say that I am a photographer, I just love photography and sometimes when you have a concrete idea of what you want as a result, you have to do it by yourself. This is how I got to photogaph some series for the magazine, it is also about pleasure. If I have an idea in mind that I think I am capable of shooting myself, I just go for it. The best serie I've shot so far is the one I shot with my favourite model, Sarah Yinda. Queen, spread in the september 'Africa' issue.

Do you appear in any of the photos?
No I do never appear in the photos (laughs). That is so not my place.

Are there any plans to begin hard copy production of Ghubar?
If there are, we will let you know pretty soon ;).

What do you do in your spare time?
Well, I feel like a grandma lately because I don't go out that much anymore. But that's for the good cause :) ! Of course I still do what a 22 year-old girl does : shopping, hanging out with friends, and go to the movies (that's my favourite activity) but I really like to stay home, watch some series, and even if it doesn't sound cool, work.. because it's never over.

Belated Halloween Outfit!

So, I was aiming for the Baroness from G.I. Joe:

I chose to avoid the tacky spandex options in stores and figure out the outfit on my own, and considering that no one makes leather/pleather/vinyl turtleneck corsets, I wore my Bershka leather leggings, and my Velvet Angels Naked Lunch wedges (which I definitely prefer to her shoes!), so I was pretty happy that I already owned 2/3 of the costume:

Forgive me for being a loser and not having my own functioning camera since summer, hopefully, I'll remember to pick up a new charger somewhere in the middle of this whirlwind life.

I spent most of last Saturday afternoon being shuffled about on Broadway between Broome & W Houston in NYC. While there was SO much shopping that could have happened, I kept my head and reminded myself that I am not to spend anything...yet. Then, I walked into WeSC and saw their F10 catalog and I must have this dress:

Right now, mixed media is calling my name, I love things like this that have just that touch of a different material, and I especially love how it's been manifested in the leather/suede combo boots I've been seeing (post on these to come soon.) FBFF: Destructive Criticism

1. Do you post pictures on your blog, or would you if the opportunity came along, of people with poor fashion//beauty sense?
I don't post pictures with the intent to criticize someone's "poor" fashion sense, I am generally of the opinion that there are more positive/interesting things to write about (though this is also just an opinion, others may find that tearing down people who don't know they're being criticized is wildly amusing.)

2. Do you read any blogs that highlight the bad? Why?
I have in the past (think: failblog) because they are presented in a comical light. Then, I ran into more scathing commentary, and while everyone is entitled to an opinion, some things are executed in poor taste, though I know that in itself is a matter of opinion.

3. Should these bloggers get permission to post the pictures from the subject in the same way the street-style blogs do?
Posting the pictures without permission is part of their basis, if they asked, most of these blogs would not exist.

4. As human beings we are fascinated with disasters - of all sorts -why do you think that is? How do the blogs/websites that highlight the negative thrive?
The depth of this question cannot be answered on this blog and for the sake of my readers' sanities I will spare them the essay that is forming in my head. I will say that the human fascination with the "grotesque" is one of our most inherent qualities, we spot something 'different' and it's almost certain we will surrender to the urge to gawk. It's like being in traffic because there was an accident on the opposite side of the roadway; nobody wants to be involved, yet they slow down so that they can take in as much detail as possible before deciding what must have happened. Human curiosity is completely unbiased, we are creatures of greed and acquisition, we want to know everything, whether negative or positive.

5. For many, fashion is subjective. Do you think, there can be anything that is objectively bad in the fashion world?
Fashion is a wild animal that is perpetually changing, one cannot be truly objective in a world that is built on opinions and mass appeal, one just has to have friends who are willing to feel the same about something and spread that feeling (think The Emperor's New Clothes.) It is an endless popularity contest where taste is always evolving.

I love wandering about the internet and stumbling across wonderful things, which is exactly what happened this weekend when I found Ghubar Magazine (...from Erra of Arre to LateBoots to GMag). For those of you who have heard of it, let me ask: have you seen the September issue? For those of us who are new to it: HAVE YOU SEEN THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE:

The images are absolutely beautiful, and the content is well-written, even if you don't read French (mine is quite rusty). Do not mistake this tiny collage for anything near a snippet of what they have, the magazine covers so many points that I am still going back and forth to make sure I didn't miss anything. So far, my favorite features are the article on Nikaule (page 30) and the Queen photoshoot, featuring Eva Minge couture (page 56) on a beautiful model as photographed and styled by Sarah Diouf! Seriously, I need a session with Ms. Diouf because if this is even the tip of her talent, I cannot wait to see what comes next for this magazine. Be sure to check out the Prince of Sand feature as well, the jacket on page 71 is so good I want it for myself. The greatest part of this lovingly composed work is the sheer professionalism in the production and the apparent effort exerted in its creation. I am a fan of hard work, and if this is the result, I am definitely a Ghubar devotee :)

Not long ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the headquarters of the fantastic Warby Parker, whose glasses you may remember from this post. For those of you unfamiliar with this amazing endeavor, WP offers chic, affordable eyewear directly to their customers. Their service model is unique in that there are no middle factors, the small team receives and attends to customer orders. They also offer free at-home try-ons of up to five frames, and as if this couldn't get sweeter: for every pair sold, a pair is donated to such non-profits as RestoringVision, so you can look great and be part of something great!

When I arrived, it was apparent that this was no ordinary office. Two of the four founders were working in the back end of the space, while several team members were readily available around the table set out towards the front of the office. I was immediately prompted to try on any frames I'd like and in the meantime asked a few questions:

What exactly is the design process for a WP frame?
For our first line, the founders (Neil, Andrew, Jeffrey, and David) essentially picked out the coolest designs and put their own twist on them; for example, the multi-dimensional checkered pattern on the Wiloughby:

Which frame is your best seller?

The Roosevelt, for both men & women.

Are there any designs in the works for future release?

We actually have a new line set to be released late 2010 or early 2011. We're collaborating with a well-known designer in the eyewear industry, so we're pretty excited about that. We're also working towards a collection of sunglasses for around the same time.

That's quite a lot for a few month's time, what's a typical day in the office like?

Honestly, there is no typical day, each one is different and crazy!

One last question, how did the monocle come about & does it sell well?

It actually sells very well, particularly among the older crowd! The founders came up with that as a playful way to set themselves apart, just a fun element to add to the collection.

WP has their newly acquired office (they were moving as we arranged my visit) in the lovely Union Square area, a half block from the park and on the sixth floor of a lovely edifice with a deceivingly narrow facade. It boasts a perfectly casual atmosphere where arranged visits are encouraged and welcome! For those of you in the NYC metro area, feel free to contact them for more information, it's definitely worth the visit!

For the past two weeks, I've had the most inconsistent access to the internet one could ask for, but it was quite an adventurous time for me and there are some pretty scenic pictures I'll be sure to share. I visited my motherland (the Dominican Republic) and in two weeks, I experienced more of it than I have over my entire life! The few posts that went up recently were mostly scheduled, so forgive me for having basically disappeared, I have SO much reading to catch up on, I can't wait to make my rounds!
P.S. if you're travelling, do yourself a favor and wear a maxi dress for those hot destinations! I wore something similar to this, and I may never go back to pants again...

at least until I slip into my favorite super soft jeggings!

Honestly, I do like how the material feels and looks, but the fact that they often cost the same as their jean counterpart makes me question the urge, though AE and Kohl's have some on sale now, for those who are interested! What do you think about the latest iteration of jeggings?

I've been asked by a friend to lead the design of the female line for his tee company! I'm freaking out and looking everywhere for inspiration, I cannot wait to get it started. Summer Lusting

I'm afraid of heights, but I might brave it for this experience at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore:

The pool is part of the hotel's SkyPark on the 55th floor (eep!). The park itself is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall, and the pool is just under 500 ft. long!! It's also the world's most expensive hotel, but hopefully someday... :sigh:

P.S. my fascination with the pool, however, is not enough to mask my disdain towards the literal cruise ship shape of the park, that's totally a party foul.

In one of my older posts, I mentioned how sad it makes me that I'm shut in for the majority of daylight hours and how I wished I could be out taking more pictures and developing my photo skills. When I was in Philly, we spent most of the days walking around, and though I was mainly wrapped in fantastic conversation, I did manage to snap a few worth sharing for critique!

Just wanted to drop some Architecture in here, check out this boardwalk on the Benidorm Beachfront in Spain. It's beautiful, even the underside is designed, so hot.

So, usually when I love something but am not prepared for the price, I check out Ebay. Unfortunately, there's one item I've had no luck with: the Jessica Simpson Dany platforms!

Every time I see them in a picture, my heart beats a little faster and I begin the futile Google search for anywhere that may have an inkling of a chance of having them in stock. So today, I checked Ebay, and found a lot more listings than the last time I checked; but with 10+ bids on all of them and my ever-changing schedule, I probably wouldn't be able to "snipe" them. My next step was to check out other shoe sites and sign up for alerts when they become available. Then, on a whim, I went to the actual JS website and voila! There they were in their sky-high glory, in sizes 5-10 for black and 9-10 in tan. (insert jaw-dropping sound effect) Needless to say, I went for it! I cannot WAIT until they arrive!!! I love blogging, the first thing I knew I had to do was share with my readers! Happy weekend everybody!!
